Platt Park Historic Gut

Originally built in 1900, this 2,255-square-foot Platt Park home had beautiful historic character but required far more than a cosmetic renovation. At 126 years old, the home had developed significant structural and safety concerns that had to be addressed before any finish work could begin. The structure was extensively reinforced from the inside out, resolving conditions serious enough that the home could not safely be occupied until the necessary work was completed.

Once the home was structurally sound, Truth Design Build completed a full gut renovation across all three levels. The scope included extensive reframing, new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, new and relocated windows and doors, insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, millwork, tile, lighting and paint. The main floor was reworked to improve the relationship between the kitchen, dining and living spaces, while the upper level was reconfigured to create a more functional primary suite and updated secondary bedrooms and bathrooms. The finished basement was also renovated to provide additional usable living space.

The interior design bridges the age of the home with a lighter, more relaxed contemporary aesthetic. In the kitchen, deep forest-green cabinetry is balanced by warm white finishes, natural white oak accents and shelving, brass hardware and lighting, quartz countertops and a softly textured white tile backsplash. A large multifunctional island adds storage, prep space and seating, while the adjoining built-in desk creates a practical workspace within the kitchen.

Throughout the home, new oak flooring, hardwood stairs, custom cabinetry, warm woods, creamy whites, aged-brass details, natural stone and handmade-looking tile create continuity without making the house feel overly new or disconnected from its historic architecture. The result is a completely rebuilt historic home that functions like a modern house while still feeling appropriate to its original character and neighborhood. Rather than recreating a period interior, the design preserves the warmth and charm of the home while introducing a comfortable, understated contemporary style suited to everyday family life.
